The famous Carnian Pluvial Event occurred during the Late Triassic Carnian Period from 2.27 to 237 million years ago. This event not only brought about an important change in the global environment, but also became an important global event. The enrichment of energy minerals provides conditions. There have been many studies on the record of this event in the marine strata, but there are few records on the changes of the terrestrial environment in the Carnian flood event. The Ordos Basin in northwestern my country has developed well-preserved Triassic strata, and the strata formed in the Carnian Period of the Late Triassic (the upper part of the Tongchuan Formation and the Yanchang Formation) are important oil and gas resource enrichment horizons.
Professor Sun Yuewu’s team from the Key Laboratory of Biological Evolution and Environment in Northeast Asia of the Ministry of Education and the Center for Paleontology and Stratigraphy of Jilin University initiated research on the Upper Triassic stratigraphy and biological fossils in the Ordos Basin in 2018, focusing on biological issues in important geological periods. The co-evolution mechanism with the environment and the oil and gas enrichment mechanism of the Ordos Basin in the Late Triassic, etc., successively undertook the projects of the State Key Laboratory of Shale Oil and Gas Enrichment and Effective Development and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. At present, the team has conducted U-Pb dating tests on the three groups of porphyrite samples from the Chang 7 Member of the Yanchang Formation in the Yunmeng section in the southeast of the Ordos Basin, and obtained ages of 234.1 ± 2.4 Ma, 234.8 ± 2.1 Ma and 236.0 ± 1.7 Ma. Under the framework of this era, the team studied the changes of the flora during this period, and discussed the evolution of the palaeoclimate in the Ordos Basin during this geological period and the response of the terrestrial ecosystem to the flood events in the Carnian period. More related research is still in progress.
